New Years tradition: Osechi ryori ( Osechi are easily recognizable by their special boxes called jūbako (重箱), which resemble bentō boxes. Like bentō boxes, jūbako are often kept stacked before and after use. taken from wikipedia). Since we were visiting family in Los Angeles, my mother-in-law put together osechi ryori for the family.  We had this for brunch at 11 a.m., followed by visiting my family (mother's side) in Yorba Linda, then the other side of my family (father's side) in Downey.  Each location had a large array of foods, everyone bringing something to share for this once a year get together.  LOVE seeing my family on New Years! We were asked to bring dessert and so with my limited tools (and time) on hand, I made mini cheesecakes to share! Looking back at all the different foods I had to try, and I HAD to taste everyone's shared dish, I see now how I gained 10 lbs. on the first day of the year! Brunch at the Osuga's Late lunch
